Program Overview

Complete your degree in just two years

This program is designed for students who have completed a diploma in Social Service Work, Social Service Work – Gerontology, Child and Youth Care, Community Work or an equivalent program. Students from these programs who meet the admission requirements will be able to enter directly into the third year of this degree. No bridging courses are required to get into this unique program, which consists of four semesters and an internship.

Learn skills that are in high demand

Today's human service organizations require workers who have critical thinking, research and leadership abilities. This program is built to address those needs. Skills you’ll learn include:

  • Project management
  • Social innovation and creative problem solving
  • Non-profit governance
  • Research and grant writing
  • Social entrepreneurship
  • Community leadership and advocacy

Applied learning and research opportunities

Work directly with Sheridan’s experienced professors and our large network of community practitioners. You'll work on a research project and provide solutions to real-world issues brought forward by our community partners, who will then provide you with valuable feedback. You'll also practice those skills during a four-month summer internship.

Flexible schedule

You can choose to take this program remotely (fully online) or through our hybrid delivery model (a combination of in-person and online courses). You can also choose to take courses in the daytime or the evening — whichever works best for your schedule. No matter which delivery mode you choose, you'll have opportunities to build rich relationships and a strong sense of community in this engaging program.

Opportunities for further education

Once you complete this degree, you may choose to pursue further studies to build on the skills and experience that you've developed.

Graduates from this program can apply for master's programs in many areas, such as:

  • Social work
  • Adult education and community development
  • Counselling psychology
  • Aging and health policy
  • Policy and digital strategy
  • Justice studies
  • Conflict resolution and peace studies

Sheridan has been granted a consent by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities to offer this degree for a seven-year term starting September 29, 2021 and subject to renewal thereafter. Application to the Ministry for renewal of the consent is a prescribed and cyclical requirement for degree programs at all Ontario Colleges. Sheridan will ensure that all students admitted to the program during the period of consent will have the opportunity to complete the program within a reasonable time frame. Credentials earned during the period of consent remain valid, even if Ministry consent to offer the program is withdrawn in the future. Prospective students are responsible for satisfying themselves that the program and the degree will be appropriate to their needs (e.g. acceptable to potential employers, professional licensing bodies, or other educational institutions).

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s a “Degree Completion” program?

Degree Completion allows you to apply your diploma credits towards a Sheridan degree, which means you can complete your degree and advance your career sooner.

The Bachelor of Social and Community Development (BSCD) program is only available to students who have completed a diploma in Social Service Worker, Social Service Worker – Gerontology, Child and Youth Care/Child and Youth Worker, Community Worker or an equivalent program. Students from these programs who meet the admission requirements will be able to enter directly into the third year of this degree, without taking any additional bridging courses.

Can students from other diploma or degree programs apply to the BSCD?

Programs in the human services area that have a similar structure to the Social Service Worker, Social Service Worker – Gerontology, Child and Youth Care/Child and Youth Worker or Community Worker program will be considered on a case-by-case basis. In this situation, applicants may be required to submit an additional portfolio or complete some bridging courses. View the admission requirements for more information.

What’s the difference between a college and university degree?

Sheridan's Bachelor of Social and Community Development (BSCD) program is approved by the same Ministry of Colleges and Universities as a university degree. As a graduate of this program, you’ll have equal opportunities to pursue graduate studies or apply for jobs that require a degree.

While the BSCD is equivalent to a university degree, it has the added benefit of small classes and exciting experiential learning opportunities. By the end of the program, you'll have completed at least 1,020 hours of experiential learning through your practicum and internship.

Will this program lead to a Bachelor of Social Work?

The BSCD is not a pathway to a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW), but it can provide a pathway to a Master of Social Work (MSW). Once you've successfully completed the BSCD, you'll be eligible to apply to several MSW programs in Ontario.

What delivery modes are available for the program?

A variety of online, hybrid and face-to-face options are available in this program. Courses are scheduled with students' needs in mind. Once you apply, you'll be able to indicate your preference in terms of delivery mode and schedule.

Can I take this program on a part-time basis?

This program does not currently have a part-time offering. However, we’re happy to work with you to create a schedule that works for you.

Will I need to take elective courses?

As part of your degree, you’ll automatically be enrolled in Sheridan’s Composition and Rhetoric course. You'll take three other Degree Breadth Elective courses in this program, which you’ll be able to select based on your interests and to complement the core curriculum.

What are the tuition fees for the program?

The Ministry of Colleges and Universities sets tuition fees for diploma and degree programs. Degree program fees are higher than the fees you paid in your diploma, but elements of the BSCD program can help offset your costs:

  • We use Open Educational Resources (OERs), which means you won't have significant textbook costs.
  • We offer many Work Study positions – paid, on-campus employment opportunities.
  • Your internship between Semesters 3 and 4 can be a paid work opportunity.

View the fees for this program.

Is financial aid available?

Yes! There are many financial aid options available, including the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) and entrance scholarships for eligible applicants. View Fees & Financial Aid for details.

Is there someone I can talk to for more information?

If you have any further questions about the Bachelor of Social and Community Development program, please email the BSCD Program Coordinator, Bethany Osborne, at bethany.osborne@sheridancollege.ca
