A nursing degree that is forward-thinking, student-centred and hands-on.
Program Overview
Intraprofessional learning to create a healthier nursing community
This degree reimagines what nursing education should be, helping you understand the valuable roles that both Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) and Registered Nurses (RNs) play in our health-care system. You’ll first learn entry-to-practice competencies required of both RPNs and RNs, then build on that knowledge to master advanced competencies RNs need to care for unstable and complex patients.
Apply your skills in the classroom and in the field
Graduate with nearly 1,600 hours of real-world experience. This is the first nursing degree program in Ontario to include two consolidation preceptored placements, sharpening your skills after your fourth and eighth semesters. Our nursing labs also use high-fidelity mannequins and UbiSim virtual simulation software to ensure you enter the workforce ready to care for patients.
Earn your nursing licence in just two years
If you need to exit this program early, you’ll meet the Colleges of Nurses of Ontario’s (CNO’s) entry-to-practice competencies for RPNs after two years of studies — meaning you can graduate with a Practical Nursing (Leadership and Education focus) diploma and write your RPN licensing exam. If you re-enter Sheridan’s degree program within the next two years, no bridging courses will be required.
Develop leadership, communication and resilience skills
In each year of your studies, you’ll earn certificates that are valued by employers and could help you advance in your career more quickly:
- Year 1 – Gentle Persuasive Approach Certificate: Learn to provide person-centred and compassionate care to clients with Dementia.
- Year 2 – Crucial Conversations Course: Develop communication skills that enable you to navigate difficult conversations in high-stress situations.
- Year 3 – Crisis Prevention Training Certificate: Understand tactics and strategies that prevent and de-escalate violent behaviours.
- Year 4 – Mastering My Mental Fitness For Nurses: Strengthen your mental wellbeing and develop resilience needed to work in fast-paced and stressful environments.
Sheridan has been granted a consent by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities to offer this degree for a seven-year term starting September 18, 2023 and subject to renewal thereafter. Application to the Ministry for renewal of the consent is a prescribed and cyclical requirement for degree programs at all Ontario colleges. Sheridan will ensure that all students admitted to the Honours Bachelor of Science – Nursing program during the period of consent will have the opportunity to complete the program within a reasonable time frame. Credentials earned during the period of consent remain valid, even if Ministry consent to offer the program is withdrawn in the future. Prospective students are responsible for satisfying themselves that the program and the degree will be appropriate to their needs (e.g. acceptable to potential employers, professional licensing bodies, or other educational institutions).

Clinical Placements
Over the course of the Honours Bachelor of Science – Nursing program students will participate in 7 clinical placements including long-term care, acute care, community care and specialty placements.
Clinical placement requirements
You’ll be required to provide documentation for the following items directly to your clinical placement. You must provide this documentation before the start of your placement, and at your own expense. If you can’t meet these requirements, you may not be able to participate in clinical placements, which will jeopardize your progress in the program.
Note: Sheridan uses an external third-party vendor for pre-placement document verification. There is a charge for this service and students are responsible for the payment.
1. Police clearance for Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS)
The Honours Bachelor of Science – Nursing program requires a police clearance for vulnerable sector persons, which includes obtaining a Vulnerable Sector Screen, every six months. You must maintain this clearance throughout the program.
2. Immunization
You’ll also need to have up-to-date immunization (including MMR, Tdap, Varicella, Hepatitis B, flu shot, and TB) before you can participate in a clinical placement. Additionally, many of our healthcare partners are requiring that students have been vaccinated against COVID-19. Please refer to Sheridan’s Health Services’ immunization information online for details, or visit one of our campus health centres.
3. CPR
You’re required to have Standard First Aid and CPR Level C or Health Care Provider (HCP). You’ll need to be re-certified for CPR annually. First Aid will need to be updated every two years from the date of issue.
4. Mask Fit Test
You will need to be mask fit tested for a specialized N95 respirator mask. Once the test is conducted, you will receive a card with your mask fit size. Keep this card with you.
5. COVID-19 Vaccination Requirements
In the Nursing program, our students participate in clinical placements in Long-Term Care homes and hospital settings. At this time, the Long-Term Care Home COVID-19 Immunization Policy requires that individuals, including students, must have met the immunization requirements. These requirements include one of the following:
- the full series of a COVID-19 vaccine authorized by Health Canada, or any combination of such vaccines,
- one or two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine not authorized by Health Canada, followed by one dose of a COVID-19 mRNA vaccine authorized by Health Canada, or
- three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine not authorized by Health Canada,
and a third dose of a COVID-19 vaccine authorized by Health Canada if eligible for a third dose.
We strongly recommend that Nursing students get their vaccinations as outlined above before the semester starts. A student without the proper vaccines will not be able to complete their required placement in long-term care and this may impact ability to graduate from the program.
For up-to-date information regarding Sheridan’s response to COVID-19 and for links to public health information, please see Sheridan’s COVID-19 webpage.
