Sheridan's Honours Bachelor of Information Sciences (Cyber Security) program provides outstanding preparation for a rewarding career in this rapidly growing field. Our one-of-a-kind degree program has a stellar reputation among employers. With a Sheridan Cyber Security degree, you'll be prepared to join this exciting profession – and to get ahead in it.

Gain practical experience

Sheridan's Cyber Security degree program includes an internship of up to 28 weeks between Years 3 and 4. You'll acquire workplace skills and professional contacts while gaining real-world cyber security experience.

A curriculum for the real world

You'll advance from fundamental computer science principles to more specialized courses covering all aspects of cyber security, including:

  • Computer security
  • IS Intrusion detection and prevention
  • Network security
  • Ethical hacking
  • Database security

Additional information

The classroom environment simulates workplace conditions via mobile computing. You'll work on a laptop and enjoy online access to lecture notes, assignments, and other subject material at all times, from any location. Students use mobile computing to collaborate on group projects, conduct web-based research and visit chat rooms.

Transfer students may be eligible to enter Year 2 or Year 3 of this program.

Ministry Consent

Sheridan has been granted a consent by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities to offer this degree for a further seven-year term starting January 28, 2021 and subject to renewal thereafter. Application to the Ministry for renewal of the consent is a prescribed and cyclical requirement for degree programs at all Ontario Colleges. Sheridan will ensure that all students admitted to the Honours Bachelor of Applied Information Sciences (Information Systems Security) program during the period of consent will have the opportunity to complete the program within a reasonable time frame. Credentials earned during the period of consent remain valid, even if Ministry consent to offer the program is withdrawn in the future. Prospective students are responsible for satisfying themselves that the program and the degree will be appropriate to their needs (e.g. acceptable to potential employers, professional licensing bodies or other educational institutions).

Program Eligibility

Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent, including these required courses:

  • English, Grade 12 (ENG4U)

plus

  • Any Grade 12 science (U or M) or Grade 12 Computer Science (U) or Grade 12 Computer Engineering Technology (U or M)
  • Any Grade 12 mathematics (U)
  • Three other Grade 12 credits (U or M)
  • Minimum 65% overall average

or

  • Two semesters of postsecondary education including required courses with a minimum 65% overall average

Applicant Selection

Eligible applicants will be selected on the basis of their previous academic achievement (the average of their six highest senior-level credits, including required courses).

Applicants who do not meet the admission requirements for this program may be advised individually regarding other related programs.

After completing the bridging semester, you'll be eligible to enrol in Year 2 of the degree as a full-time student. Once enrolled, you'll need to meet all remaining course requirements to earn your information science degree. You'll also be expected to meet any missing liberal arts breadth course requirements, at the bachelor degree level.

All students in this information science program work on laptop computers and have online access, 24/7, to lecture notes, assignments, presentations and other course material. Students are able to collaborate on group projects from home.

Admission requirements

To be eligible for bridging into Year 2, you must hold a two-year diploma in Computer Systems Technician, Computer Programming, Computer Engineering Technician, Computer Science Technician or Telecommunications Technician and have a cumulative average of at least 65% in core courses.

Applicants who have completed the first year of computer-related programs at the university level with a cumulative average of 65% in core courses will also be eligible for admission into the bridging program.

If your transcript is older than four years, you may be required to demonstrate industry currency through relevant experience.

Graduates of this program will have demonstrated the ability to:

  • Manage the security lifecycle of computer systems, databases and networks, which includes analysis, design and maintenance.
  • Develop, secure and maintain computer systems and networks to meet user requirements.
  • Use computer architecture and operating systems design principles, and theory of algorithms and data structures in security related projects.
  • Create secure software applications using object-oriented, structured, scripting and low-level programming techniques and software engineering methodologies, which pertain to development, testing and documentation activities.
  • Perform code analysis and testing for security weaknesses.
  • Apply security and threat analysis and auditing procedures and perform security vulnerability assessments.
  • Solve information systems security problems through the development and implementation of security policies and techniques.
  • Implement formal information systems security protocols and methodologies.
  • Evaluate the strength and quality of cryptographic components using cryptographic algorithms and techniques.
  • Perform digital forensics analysis and collect electronic evidence respecting all best practices in the field including proper maintenance of the chain of evidence for investigation purposes.
