Admission to Postsecondary Programs

Program-specific admission requirements

  • Admission requirements vary depending on your program. Check your program page for the academic and supplemental specific requirements.
  • You must also meet all admission and supplemental requirements listed for your program of choice.
  • Meeting or exceeding the minimum score requirements does not guarantee admission to Sheridan College. Check your program page and the list of high‑demand programs.
  • Offers of admission may be conditional pending the completion of all required courses on or before the due date posted on your offer, due approximately one month before the first day of classes.
  • Admission to Sheridan’s programs is based on both academic requirements and English language proficiency for all students whose first language is not English.

Ontario applicants

  • Applicants may be admitted to Sheridan if they have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with senior-level credits achieved as per specific program requirements.
  • Applicants require a minimum Grade 12 English (ENG4C or ENG4U or equivalent) as required for their program plus all required courses as outlined for their program choice.
  • Workplace E level courses are not accepted.
  • Senior-level credits refer to credits earned at Grade 11 and 12.
  • Ontario secondary pre-2000 senior-level credits refer to Grade 11, 12, 13 and OAC levels. Grade differentials are not used.
  • Ontario high school Grade 12 marks (including first semester mid-term marks) are used in the admissions decision process. Grade 11 final marks may be used in the admissions process if a student is enrolled in required courses in Grade 12.

Applicants outside of Ontario

Equivalency to the Ontario high school diploma

Sheridan recognizes the following within Canada as equivalent to the Ontario high school diploma. Diplomas must be from a public or private secondary school accredited by the province.

  • All Grade 12 secondary school diplomas from other Canadian provinces and territories
  • For Quebec applicants applying to certificate or diploma programs:
    • High School Leaving Certificate (Secondary V):
      • English Language Arts Secondary V with a minimum grade of 50% meets the English Grade 12C level (ENG4C) admission requirement.
  • For Quebec applicants applying to degree programs:
    • CEGEP minimum one full year of successful study with academic pre‑university courses over 50% in required courses. One course (603) English with a minimum grade of 50% meets the English Grade 12U level (ENG4U) admission requirement. Sheridan may consider senior level secondary IV or V courses for some degree requirements (i.e. grade 11 visual arts or math requirements). Or two (2) semesters of a recognized Quebec University where the primary language of instruction is English. One academic English course meets the English Grade 12U level (ENG4U) admission requirement.

Applicants with international credentials

  • International applicants must meet the course equivalencies of the Canadian admission requirements.
  • For applicants with education completed outside of Canada, a credential assessment may be required.
  • English Proficiency Requirements may be requested and can be met in three ways: successful completion of Sheridan’s ESL program; or previous secondary or postsecondary education in English; or achieving the minimum requirements of an English-language proficiency test. Sheridan reserves the right to require proof of proficiency in English from any applicant (regardless of citizenship, country of origin, education or first language).

Applicants applying with alternate equivalencies

Sheridan may recognize the following as equivalent to the OSSD:

  • GED (General Educational Development Certificate)
  • CAEC Canadian Adult Education Credential (replaced the GED in 2024)
  • Mature students must be 19 years old by the first day of classes. An Ontario Secondary School Diploma is not a requirement for a mature applicant.
  • Academic upgrading
  • Homeschool applicants must meet the published admission requirements to their program of choice. Homeschool applicants can provide their official transcript or letter from their school board recognized by the Ministry of Education to show meeting the requirements of an OSSD equivalency. Official transcripts may be required for required courses.

All applicants with an equivalency above are required to meet the academic and supplemental requirements for their program choices by one of the options below:

Applying to certificate or diploma programs:

  • Courses: Complete the specific academic required courses at a secondary or postsecondary school recognized by the Ministry of Education to meet the academic admission requirements. Official transcripts will be required.
  • Testing: Applicants who have not met program-specific admission requirements will be invited to write the English, math or science equivalency test(s). Testing details are emailed to the applicant.

Applying to degree programs:

  • Secondary school courses: Complete the specific academic required grade 12 courses at a secondary school recognized by the Ministry of Education to meet the academic admission requirements. Official transcripts will be required.
  • Or successful completion of two semesters of postsecondary education including the required English (ENG4U or equivalent) and all admission requirements as outlined on the program page for your program of interest.
  • Testing cannot be used to meet degree program admission requirements.

Required computer skills

All Sheridan students must have experience using computers. You’ll need computer skills to be successful in your program of study and your future career. The level of computer literacy required varies by program. See Computing & Internet Requirements for Sheridan Programs.
