Syed received his Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from Kyung Hee University (KHU), South Korea in 2010. Prior to that he received his M.Sc. in Computer Science (University of Dhaka, Bangladesh), and his B.Sc. in Applied Physics and Electronics (University of Dhaka, Bangladesh).

In 2015, he completed a 2-year NSERC Industrial Research and Development Fellowship (IRDF) with a Toronto-based IT industry. Previously, he served in two PostDoctorate Fellow positions – first in the Department of Computer Engineering at KHU (2010), and then in the Department of Computer Science at University of Manitoba (UofM), Canada.

Syed has taught in the Department of Computer & Mathematical Sciences at University of Toronto Scarborough, Department of Computer Science at UofM, at Humber College, Toronto and at Centennial College, Toronto. In August 2018, Syed has joined in Faculty of Applied Science and Technology at Sheridan College as full-time faculty.

Syed’s research focuses on big data analytics, data mining, computational intelligence, health informatics, social network analysis, and cyber security. He has been an active contributor to  numerous academic and industrial projects in a variety of areas such as data analytics, health informatics, sensor networks, financial exchange data, digital convergence, and cybersecurity.

Syed has published a large number of research articles in international journals and conferences, and book chapters, and he, as a co-inventor, has secured a US patent on the invention of an efficient anti-phishing technique.
