Picket Line Safety
Sheridan College respects the legal right of bargaining units to strike. During this time, picket lines may be present at campus entrances and on public property such as sidewalks. We ask all members of our community to approach these areas with respect and understanding.
Respecting the Right to Strike
- Picketing is lawful when peaceful and conducted on public property.
- Striking employees may distribute information and carry signs.
- Picketing is not permitted inside buildings or on other private property.
- Intimidation, harassment, or obstruction of access is unlawful and will not be tolerated.
Crossing Picket Lines Safely
If You Are Walking
- Expect to see groups of people and signage.
- Accept or decline literature politely.
- Keep conversations friendly and brief.
- Avoid confrontation or aggressive behaviour.
If You Are Driving
- Approach picket lines slowly and cautiously.
- Stop when requested—do not accelerate or rev your engine.
- You will be allowed to cross once it is safe to do so.
