Magdin Stoica is a computer science professor and Program Coordinator of the Honours Bachelor of Computer Science (Mobile Computing) program at Sheridan College. He began his education career at Sheridan in 2006 and brings 20 years of teaching experience and an extensive industry background to programming education and curriculum development. He teaches computer science and software engineering and co-architected Sheridan’s Mobile Computing degree program.
His applied research explores emerging computing technologies in healthcare, community building, and personal development, with interests in cognitive computing, mixed reality, and the integration of mobile, wearable, Internet of Things, and collaborative computing devices. As a principal investigator at Sheridan’s Centre for Mobile Innovation, he contributed to Clinic of the Future, a research collaboration with Cloud DX exploring mixed reality and real-time patient information to support clinical care.
From 2021 to 2023, he served as Director, Human Development Technologies, leading development of Sheridan’s S-Sense platform, a mobile and cloud solution designed to cultivate student agility and resilience.
His industry background spans business intelligence, aerospace and simulation, telecommunications, and computer-aided design, with roles in software development, architecture, consulting, and technical leadership. He holds a BEng in Computer and Software Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Bucharest and an MEng in Software Engineering from McMaster University.
Elected by his colleagues, he served on Sheridan’s inaugural Senate from 2012 to 2014. Outside his professional work, he enjoys playing guitar and sports and volunteers as an Aikido instructor at the Georgetown Aikido Club.
Teaching Interests
- Software engineering, software project management, mobile application development, and mobile computing, with particular interests in software design and architecture, cross-platform development, and the integration of mobile applications with cloud services and connected devices. Teaching emphasizes hands-on, project-based learning and the responsible use of AI to motivate and engage students in designing, implementing, and delivering practical software solutions. These learning experiences develop computational thinking, a systems perspective, analysis and design capabilities, collaboration, technical communication, and project management skills. Ethics, accountability, student agency, and intellectual sovereignty remain central, empowering students to design and create with confidence while retaining ownership of their reasoning and decisions.
Research Interests
- Applied research into emerging computing technologies that support healthcare, student development, community building, and education. Interests include mixed reality, cognitive computing, and the integration of mobile applications, cloud services, wearable devices, and Internet of Things technologies into practical, human-centred solutions. Building on Clinic of the Future, healthcare research explores the presentation of contextual, real-time patient information to support clinical care. Informed by Sheridan’s S-Sense platform, student development research explores technologies that foster agility, resilience, self-reflection, and meaningful social connection, alongside the responsible use of AI to strengthen motivation, engagement, and creative confidence in teaching and learning. Across these domains, research emphasizes ethics, accountability, agency, and intellectual sovereignty, including how learning experiences across the K–20 pathway can develop computational thinking, systems perspectives, analysis and design capabilities, and independent judgment.
