Academic bargaining updates

Updated October 21, 2024

Overview

The CAAT-A faculty union has voted in favour of a strike mandate, meaning that a majority of union members have voted to empower their union to hold a strike that would impact all of Ontario’s 24 public colleges.

While the union now has the authority to call a strike, please note that this does not mean that a strike will happen, only that it is a possibility. There are still additional steps that must be completed before any strike action can occur. Labour action can also take many forms and, in some cases, may not impact students in a noticeable way. Sheridan College remains hopeful that both sides will reach an agreement to avoid any work stoppage.

We understand that this potential strike situation is concerning for our students and our employees.

What is a strike?

A strike is a refusal to work organized by a body of employees, typically a labour union, as a form of protest. The purpose of a strike is to compel an employer to agree to terms and conditions of employment. Striking employees often demonstrate or "picket" and delay traffic entering the employer's property. Picketing is a legal activity, which usually occurs without confrontation. Workers typically walk in front of where they work, chanting and holding signs.

What does this mean for the Sheridan community?

In the event of a strike, classes will be cancelled (some Continuing Education classes will continue). Most other College services will continue to be offered. Individuals should expect delays when entering Sheridan campuses, as striking employees will be picketing at campus entrances. It is important that drivers approach the picket line in a respectful and safe manner. Pedestrians may also be approached by picketers. Pedestrians should interact with picketers in a safe, non-confrontational manner.

Sheridan respects the rights of its unionized employees to take job action. It is committed to a fair bargaining process and maintaining a respectful environment.
