practical-nursing-bukolaDuring a clinical placement in the oncology unit of Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, second-year Practical Nursing student Bukola Shonoiki discovered the power of innovation in patient care.

Her experience was more than just clinical practice – it was an opportunity to make a lasting impact. Supported by Sheridan instructors and bolstered by a commitment to experiential learning, Shonoiki explored creative solutions to enhance the experience of cancer patients, blending technology and compassionate care.

With a keen understanding that caring for cancer patients requires more than just physical treatment, Shonoiki focused her placement on addressing the emotional and mental health challenges these patients face.

She developed and led art therapy sessions for patients, giving them a creative outlet to express their emotions while waiting for treatment. She also introduced monthly mindfulness and mediation sessions for patients and their families, helping them manage anxiety and stress through coping techniques.

Shonoiki’s initiative highlights the holistic approach to patient care taught at Sheridan, where the college’s Practical Nursing program empowers students to address both the physical and emotional needs of patients.

“At Sheridan’s School of Nursing, we believe exceptional nursing extends beyond clinical expertise” said Vimbayi Makwaira, Program Coordinator of the Practical Nursing program. “Students in our Practical Nursing and Bachelor of Nursing programs are trained to provide holistic care, addressing both the physical and emotional well-being of patients. Through our supportive curriculum, we cultivate self-directed critical thinkers and lifelong learners who are committed to delivering quality care and driving positive change in healthcare, both locally and globally.”

After completing her placement, Shonoiki’s passion for providing holistic care remains unwavering.

“I am helping to promote a comprehensive approach to cancer treatment,” says Shonoiki. “Though this experience benefited me professionally, it awakened my desire to enhance the quality of care in the lives of cancer patients.”

When asked about the advice she had for future students, Shonoiki advises to “Make the most out of your [work-integrated-learning] experience by being open to feedback, practice self-care and build your professional network.”

Sheridan’s Practical Nursing program not only equips students with cutting-edge medical knowledge and technology but also teaches them to connect with patients on a deeper and more empathetic level setting our graduates apart in the healthcare field.

“My time so far at Sheridan College, particularly in the Practical Nursing program, has been truly transformative,” adds Shonoiki. “The program has equipped me with a strong foundation of knowledge and hands-on experience essential for my nursing career. It has unlocked a deep sense of empathy, critical thinking skills, and a passion for patient care within me.”
