Cassidy McFadzean joins Sheridan as Creative Writing & Publishing's 2024-25 Writer-in-Residence
Poet, writer and editor Cassidy McFadzean is joining Sheridan as the Honours Bachelor of Creative Writing & Publishing (CW&P) degree program's 2024-25 Writer-in-Residence.
Born in Regina, Sask., McFadzean holds a Master of Arts degree from the University of Regina, a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in poetry from the University of Iowa, and an MFA in fiction from Brooklyn College, where she was co-Editor-in-Chief and Fiction Editor of The Brooklyn Review. She is the author of three books of poetry: Crying Dress (House of Anansi, 2024), Drolleries (McClelland & Stewart, 2019), and Hacker Packer (M&S, 2015).
Her poetry has appeared in magazines across Canada and the U.S., and has been anthologized in The Best Canadian Poetry, In Fine Form 2, and The New Wascana Anthology. Her fiction has appeared in Joyland, EVENT, Maisonneuve, and The Best Canadian Stories, and is forthcoming in Hazlitt, The Walrus, and Invisible Publishing’s collaborative anthology Dead Writers.
“Cassidy is such a well-rounded talent, which is exactly what our students are looking for,” says Morgan Dennis, Associate Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. “Plus, her experience in the literary journal market will be of great value to our in-house magazine — The Ampersand Review of Writing & Publishing.”
Launched in 2019, Sheridan’s CW&P Writer-in-Residence Program supports a non-teaching, community- and culture-building fixed-term position (annually, from August to April) designed to complement existing CW&P programming and curriculum. Past Writers-in-Residence have included notable authors and playwrights such as Liz Howard, Adam Pottle, Naben Ruthnum and Kate Cayley.
McFadzean will spend her time at Sheridan developing personal writing projects, visiting and contributing to writing and publishing classes, leading public workshops, and providing creative leadership, mentoring, and public outreach to and on behalf of the program and school.
“I'm excited to meet with Sheridan students, bring in inspiring local authors for craft talks and conversations, and share writing and publishing knowledge with the Sheridan community!” McFadzean says.
