More than $300,000 in academic awards handed out to Sheridan students during end-of-year ceremonies

This spring, Sheridan’s students are reflecting on their achievements throughout the academic year during annual graduate shows and academic awards celebrations, a long-standing tradition that showcases student accomplishments.

The celebrations this year are marked by the return of several in-person awards ceremonies, including those in the Faculty of Animation, Arts and Design and the Faculty of Applied Science and Technology. Some programs are continuing with virtual celebrations, while others are also showcasing student work online to share it more broadly. Throughout the events, student work is shared with industry partners and potential employers and, thanks to the generous support of donors, more than $300,000 is presented to students through over 500 awards.

“These celebrations are an important time for our community to come together to reflect on and share all the wonderful work that’s been completed throughout the year,” says Dr. Janet Morrison, Sheridan’s President and Vice Chancellor. “I’m grateful to all our donors. By supporting these awards, we can honour our student work in a meaningful way.”

In many programs in the Faculty of Animation, Arts and Design, graduating students put forward their best work to be critiqued by professionals in the field, and receive awards during ceremonies. This year’s shows included a return to in-person celebrations for some, while others created websites to showcase students’ talents online, or streamed ceremonies via YouTube to allow friends and family from around the world to share in the celebration.

Mal Yu just completed her first year in the Honours Bachelor of Craft and Design (Industrial Design) program and received the Award of Excellence. “It is an absolute honor to be chosen amongst my talented peers for this award,” she says. “Completing my first year of industrial design at Sheridan has been incredibly exciting, challenging and fulfilling in ways I never expected. Within months, I experienced one of the most remarkable moments a person can have: I found the thing I want to do for the rest of my life.”

Graduates from the renowned Animation programs also continued a new tradition borne out of the pandemic, moving the annual Industry Day showcase online to share their work with local and international studios.

In other Faculties, excellence is celebrated during Academic Awards ceremonies, a year-end reflection on students’ work and their contributions inside and outside of the classroom. The Faculty of Applied Science and Technology held an in-person ceremony in late May, during which students from the Quality Assurance - Manufacturing and Management and Mechanical Techniques Plumbing program received the IPEX Award of Excellence.

“At IPEX, we believe that continuous learning and development are essential to success – for our employees, for our organization, and for our industry as a whole. It was with this belief in mind that we created the IPEX Awards of Excellence to invest in the future of our industry and the incredible students who will help to shape it,” says Saudia Satar, Senior Manager, Talent Acquisition, at the IPEX Group of Companies.

Meanwhile, the Faculty of Applied Health and Community Studies and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences hosted virtual awards shows on June 1. Later in June, the Pilon School of Business will host a virtual celebration, which will include the induction of this year’s members of the Pilon School of Business Hall of Fame.
