BFTV student documentary short honours last surviving Canadian Lancaster Bomber pilot
As a history enthusiast with deep roots in the Philippines, a country invaded just hours after the Pearl Harbour attack, Eric Cervania has always been drawn to uncovering more about World War II.
"I've read a lot of books about Canada's contributions to the war effort," says Cervania, who was born in Toronto and raised in Oakville, Ont., "and I'm continually moved by the dedication of our soldiers, nurses and countless others in the Canadian Armed Forces who fought to secure the freedom and peace we’re fortunate to have today.”
Cervania explored those feelings while directing his third-year Bachelor of Film and Television (BFTV) short documentary project, Worthy of Honour. The six-minute feature of Stoney Creek, Ont.'s John 'Jack' Frederick Finan, the last surviving Avro Lancaster bomber pilot of the Royal Canadian Air Force, was screened at last month's Hamilton Film Festival and also aired on Hamilton community television.
"When you connect with the humanity of individuals like Jack, it resonates deeply. It certainly did with me," Cervania says.
"To anyone who might watch this on Remembrance Day, I encourage you to take the time to pay respects to the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice."
